I use a variety of metals and components (beads, findings, etc) to make my jewelry. Here is a little bit of info about the materials.
Gold-filled - This metal is often confused for gold plated. Gold-filled is a wonderful substitute for the real thing (solid gold) at a fraction of the price. Gold-filled is a solid layer of gold mechanically bonded to a core base metal. It will not rub or flake off. I own gold-filled jewelry that is over 30 years old and still looks like new!
Sterling Silver - this is .925 sterling. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and (generally) 7.5% copper. It is a metal that likes to be worn and will tarnish. I store all of my sterling silver in small sealed plastic bags.
Surgical Steel - stainless steel wire treated and is good for most people with metal allergies.
Gold or Silver plated - I rarely use these metals as the gold or silver can turn colors or flake off easily.
About tarnishing - People have different PH balances that affect their jewelry. For ex, ilver is ot supposed to tarnish. However, my body chemistry tends to tarnish Argentum Silver, but not Sterling Silver! The good thing is that tarnish can be cleaned off. The best thing to use is a polish cloth as liquid cleaners can affect gemstones and pearls.
